Tauranga Intermediate x-country

Tauranga Intermediate School had a cross country on the 1st of July. Every house and class participated. The track was 3 kilometers. Every one was really excited and was ready to race! At the end of the day T.I.S had prize giving. Three people from kahikatea house came in the top 3. Which was a really good day for them. The cross country was super hard. At the end everyone was tired. No one in kahikatea house came in the 300s. So well done to KAHIKATEA HOUSE for participating and having a go!

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN CROSS COUNTRY!!

School Cross Country

TIS School Cross Country is on tomorrow Friday 1st of July. The traditional school course has had to be altered because of the heavy drainage work that has been going on down the Fraser St hill. Here is the map of the altered course for this year:

The course is still 3km but sadly due to the course being altered to remove an uphill and a downhill, no records will be recorded this year.
The rough starting times are:

9.00am Year 7 Girls

9.25am Year 7 Boys

9.50am Year 8 Girls
10.15am Year 8 Boys

Students please bring running shoes to wear and a named water bottle. Parents and supporters are welcome to attend.

Remember that every Kahikatea student's placing is added to our House total and we are trying to achieve the LOWEST overall score for the day to win.

OUR FLAG COLLECTION

Mrs Mills recently told us that she uses our blog when she is out and about teaching blogging to other classes at TIS, Greenpark and Tauranga Primary.

The weekly bloggers have been doing a great job posting interesting posts. The interviews have been a popular way of getting the voice of our class members.

Well, if you close-up on the revolving globe, you will see lots of green dots from lots of different countries around the world - meaning that we now have an international audience!

I have now installed the flags widget so that we can start our own flag collection. Whenever someone in another country visits our blog, we get their flag in our collection.

So far we have flags from NZ, England and another country?? with a red flag and a blue and white section at the top left (200 points for whoever is first to come tell me what country's flag this is - with proof)

I sent an email to a friend in China with our blog link so that we might be able to get the flag of China. Do you know people in other countries you could email too?

Our goal is to get flags from 20 countries.

Science Fair

SCIENCE FAIR BLUES!

This term we have been doing science fair and most people don’t enjoy doing this. We interviewed 6 people to find out what they thought about science fair. 2/6 people enjoy doing science fair but 4/6 people don’t like it at all. Lots of people should enjoy science fair because science is cool. Caprice was the first finished but most people are almost finished. There were 5 questions that we asked to find out how the people felt.

The death of Rue

We've been reading the hunger games and we've just passed the part where Rue dies. We watched the trailer where Rue dies and we are going to watch the movie when it comes to Cinemas.

We interviewed some people and this is what they said...

Did you enjoy the hunger games trailer?

Taylor: Yes, it looks very interesting. 

Neiwa: yes.

Strauss: sort of because it was lovey, dovey.

What would you rate the trailer out of 10?

Taylor: 8 1/2 /10.

Neiwa: 8 1/2 /10.

Strauss: 8/10.

By seeing the trailer do you think the movie would be good?

Taylor:Yes.It looks action packed.

Neiwa: Yes.

Strauss: Lots of action.

Do you think the movie would be the same as the book?

Taylor: No.

Neiwa: Few differences.

Strauss:No.

The Hunger Games

Our class has recently been reading a book called The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins.


The Hunger Games are set in a country with 12 different districts.
District one is the capital and they hold The Hunger Games each year.
The main character is Katniss.
The Hunger Games are where two people from each district are chosen to go to the capital to compete in The Hunger Games to fight to  the death. 
At the reaping for The Hunger Games Katniss's little sister called Prim got chosen for The Games but Katniss goes instead of Prim.


We interviewed four people to see what their opinion was about The Hunger Games and this is what we got.

YUMMY & COLGATE

Go hard out collecting those Yummy stickers (located on certain apples) and Colgate boxes (any flavour). Not only will we benefit via mountains of sports gear for the sports shed in Room 1, there is a weekly competition  between Kahikatea House classes and there are Spirit points for the House with the most. Also, there are 50 group points per Yummy and 100 group points per Colgate in Room 4.

Remind family and friends to look out for these brands if possible (sometimes though they are not on special so when they fit within the budget) and keep the stickers/boxes aside for us.

Production

Production is a huge thing at TIS and lots of people are into it.
At the end of term 2 (week 10) production students will be performing at Bay Court.

Who does that? Is all about two boys who come to a city called Follywood then they get stuck in a lie and pretend that they're water gods....

Kaeleigh: Yes but it's very busy
Hannah: Yes it is very fun trying on all the costumes
Taylor: Yes it is a good opportunity & it is fun

Will you be nervous when you perform at bay court?
Kaeleigh: Because I have never performed in front of anyone before
Hannah: Probably not because I dont have a very big part
Taylor: Yes because I've never acted in front of lots of people

How is production practice going?
Kaeleigh: good but there are a lot of scenes to go through
Hannah: yes it is going good
Taylor: It's going great and it's really fun

On a rate out of 10 what would you rate the quality of the actors in production?
Kaeleigh: 7 or 8
Hannah: 8/10
Taylor: 9/10

MAGNIFICENT MUSIC.

This week Room 4 has been focusing on music with Miss Story. In music we learn ukulele, guitar,keyboard and other percussion instruments. We first started with the ukulele and played 'Hey Soul Sister'. 
Than we split into two groups one to guitar and the other went to keyboard. During keyboard we played 'Ode To Joy' by Beethoven and 'Don't Worry'

by the famous Bob Marley.We then joined together and had turns at playing the percussion instruments. We played 'Ode To Joy' and 'Lean On Me'

Astronomy

Who? Tauranga Astronomical Society Inc
Where? Ferguson Park Observatory, Matua. Located in the Otumoetai Sports & Recreation Club, turn right at the end Tilby Drive.
When? 7:30pm on Tuesday 10th May

As part of the National Primary Science week the Astronomical Society has invited students to come and visit the observatory at night.
If you are interested in Astronomy and you would like to look through a telescope at the night sky, you are welcome to visit the Ferguson Park Observatory in Matua on Tuesday the 10th of May at 7.30pm with Miss C. You will need to arrange your own transport there and home and parents are encouraged to stay as this is not an official school trip.

There will be a 30 minute presentation and opportunity to look through telescopes. Saturn will be prominent at this time. Students will need to bring warm clothing.

Gold coin donation please as each evening is expensive to run and this is a voluntary organisation.

Please note this activity is WEATHER DEPENDENT and requires a clear night sky before the telescopes can be used.

Blogging features we liked

When we looked around at other people's blogs to get ideas, we needed a way to keep a record of the features we thought looked good and might want to put onto our blog.
We took snapshots of those ideas (Command-Shift-4) and put them onto a Keynote mindmap along with a web address so that we could go back and find the features we liked without too much trouble.
We converted our Keynote slides to jpegs and here is a Quicktime movie of our mindmaps.

Science Fair - Holidays

Over the holidays, you are required to prepare for Science Fair by reading through the instruction booklet and deciding on a topic.

You need to have your topic ready to tell me on the first day of Term 2.

Click the hyperlinks to see the Science Fair instruction booklet and a very comprehensive list of Science Fair ideas. (You need a gmail account to access these Google Docs files).

You are welcome to print out the instruction booklet and list of ideas at home if you wish.

Click these hyperlinks to see the powerpoint of the Science Fair process and the Technology Science Fair process that we looked at in class. (You need a gmail account to access these Google Docs files).

You can also get these files by going to Mr Marsh's LMS page. To access this, sign into Ourspace, then scroll to the bottom of the screen where it says 'Search Courses'. Enter the word 'science' and click 'go'. Then click on the word 'Science' at the top left.

Original topics are best - avoid cliched topics like 'which bread grows the most mould?', 'which bubble gum grows the biggest bubbles?', 'which baked beans produce the most gas?'.  Remember experiments which involve moulds or bacteria or those which would hurt animals or people in any way are not allowed.

Also, the Regional Science Fair has awards and $$$ prizes associated with; engineering, conservation (a number), things Maori, radio, mineral/mining, statistics, flour/baking industry, forestry, horticulture, agriculture, sports, and technology science investigations so you may want to follow one of these lines.

Finally, you will need to buy a 1B5 exercise book which will be your log book for Science Fair.

Collect your ideas up as a mind-map on 1 Keynote slide. You should have a screenshot and brief text to explain what it is you like about the feature you have found. Please include a web address. For example:
